 1.      Breeding Policy 

Cattle – Cross Breeding with Jersey and H.F. to maintain exotic inheritance at 50%.

Ø      Crossbred cows in the State -40% .

Ø      Shortfall in achievement of breeding policy due to extensive hilly terrain.

Ø      Shortage of Staff. 

Buffalo- Up gradation with Murrah Buffalo to maintain Murrah inheritance up to 75%. 

Ø      Population of upgraded buffaloes – 25%

 Sheep- Cross Breeding with Rambouillet & Russian Merino to maintain exotic inheritance at 75%.

 

Ø      Population of Crossbred Sheep – 18%

Ø      Import of Livestock is banned.

Ø      Traditional grasslands and pastures  used by Sheep breeders  have been encroached upon and have come extensively under weed cover.

Ø      Young generation is not taking interest in sheep rearing due to hard and difficult nature of job.

2.      A.I. in Cows/ Buffaloes

Ø      1725 static  A.I. Centers converted to mobile A.I. centers.

Ø      High Tech. Sperm Station for processing Cow and Buffalo semen straws established at Palampur and Aduwal (Nalagarh) respectively.

Ø      Telephone services were provided in 324 Veterinary Institutions.

Ø      20 high pedigree Jersey Bulls and  36 Buffalo bulls provided at Panchayat level in far flung areas for natural service.

Ø      Department is doing free vaccination of livestock under ASCAD project against diseases like FMD, HS, BQ, PPR, Enterotoxaemia, Ranikhet  and Marek’s disease.

7.                Backyard Poultry Farming. 

Ø      Under Backyard Poultry Project, 2-3week old chicks of coloured Strain variety i. e. Chabro and Vanaraja are supplied to the farmers of the State.

Ø      One unit consist of 50 chicks @ Rs. 14/chick.

Ø       These chicks are produced at the two hatcheries i.e. Nahan and Sundernagar, strengthened under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Assistance to State Poultry Farms”.

Ø      During year 2005-06, 7752 units were distributed.

Ø      Rs. 2.30 crores Central assistance received.

 200- CHICK SCHEME:-

Ø      The department has received sanction for the implementation of the 200- Chick scheme from the government.

Ø      Under this scheme the scheduled castes beneficiaries of the state will be provided assistance to the tune of maximum of Rs. 10,000/- start poultry farming in the form of 200 chicks along with feed, medicines, equipments, transportation, etc.

Ø       The beneficiaries with annual income less than Rs. 24,000/- per annum and land less than 25 bighas   are eligible for the above assistance.  

8.                Organization of infertility camps. 

Ø      During year 2005-06, 283 infertility camps  organized by the department in the entire State.

Ø      12,508 farmers participated in these camps and 11,968 animals treated.

Ø      400 more camps to be organised during this year. 

9.     Distribution of rams. 

Ø      1267 rams distributed to sheep breeders during last 3 years.

Ø      There is shortage of exotic rams in the State as well as in the Country. 

10.    Increase in livestock productivity.

                                        OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

Ø      Restructuring of the Department done.

Ø      136 new Veterinary Dispensaries opened. 75 more dispensaries will be opened during this year.

Ø      124 Veterinary Officers appointed on contract basis in the Department.

Ø      772 veterinary pharmacists appointed in the Department.

Ø      10 blind persons were employed on daily wages basis in the departmental institutions.

Ø      Livestock strength of Departmental farms increased, so that more and more people are benefited.

Ø      To properly maintain the existing buildings and to monitor the construction of new buildings, the job of Chief Estate Officer and Estate Officers has been assigned to the Joint Director(SLBP) and Assistant Directors,(Ext.) in the office of Deputy Directors of each districts respectively.

Ø      Site specific estimates amounting to Rs. 4.06 crore for construction of 8 Veterinary Hospitals and 280 AI sheds prepared and submitted to NABARD

Ø      Tender System for purchase of Medicines introduced.

Ø      6 daily paid beldars appointed as drivers. Proposal for filling 12 posts of drivers sent to the Govt.
