Poultry Development

The poultry farming in Himachal Pradesh plays an important role in improving the social and economic status of rural population. The sale of eggs on day to day basis helps in providing supplementary income as well as nutrition of high protein with out incurring extra expenditure. Six poultry farms, 6 extension centres and 2 hatcheries are working in the State for the benefit of the farmers. Project for poultry development is also functioning in the State covering 3 Districts namely Shimla , Una and Bilaspur . The department of Animal Husbandry is running following schemes in the State:

1. 100 eggers poultry development scheme- Under this scheme the poor farmers of the State interested in poultry farming are provided 100 No. eggers (6-8 weeks age) along with feed, equipment, medicines etc. This scheme has made the farmers adopt poultry farming as a side business along with crop production as it provide day to day income to the farmer by selling eggs.
   
2. 200 Day-old broiler scheme- Under this scheme schedule Caste  families of the State with annual income less than Rs . 24,000/- are provided assistance in form of day old broiler chicks, feed, equipment and medicines. This scheme is very profitable as broilers become marketable within 6-8 weeks and provide maximum returns.
   
3. Backyard poultry development scheme – As per feed back from the field, smaller poultry units of both broilers and eggers of 20-50 numbers are becoming popular amongst farmers. Therefore, department has started another scheme on cost basis for development of Poultry where 2-3 week old chicks (10-50/unit @ Rs. 14/chick) are supplied to the interested farmers. These poultry development activities help to –

• Provide good diet to people.
  
• Augment income of rural people.
  
• Increase the employment opportunities.
  
• Provide manure of high grade at minimal cost.
